Being a UJ-ian
There are many feelings that come with being part of or belonging to something. Be it a movement, a Family, a brother/sisterhood or an institution. When it comes to the latter, the average South African immediate post teenager (yeah, I just made this term up) does not have the pleasure and privilege of calling themselves part of such. But since you are part of the lucky ones (seeing as you’re reading this I thought it safe to assume), you are part of an institution with a culture and tradition (Academic)that has stood the test of time and warrants the pride with which its members carry themselves.
Now I should mention that others spend their time wishing that they were part of the student populations of some other institutions that they think are better (for any of a thousand reasons people always have) than UJ. But let me fill you in on this, the University of Johannesburg has that distinct aspects of being the best run and performing tertiary institution of all those that were merged in 2005 (according to me) nowadays known as comprehensive universities-It boasts the most liveliest campus environment and dare I say, the most visually appeasing (hottest) female students I have ever seen (I wouldn’t know about the guys as they’re none of my concern). Our sporting prowess is also testament of this, we boast one of the most fierce teams in the Varsity cup, our football teams boast a string of championships including having the captain and top goal scorer of Women’s national team( UJ ladies 1st team), not to mention the Olympians who represented the country in London last year, as well other accolades from many of the sporting codes we have.
Furthermore, for those who feel that they would rather be studying somewhere else I would wish to know from them whether that somewhere else has the potential of growing bigger, better and even more beautiful than it already is(all the so called top five institutions in the country have little or no room at all to do this). With that said, and before I get accused of being on the pay-roll of the UJ marketing office, I will admit that like almost all tertiary institutions there is still that niggling factor of people keeping to their kin, but we have an excuse that other varsities don’t have and that is “we are only eight years old as a combined institution”.
